  This course will introduce medical terminology including common medical word roots, prefixes, suffixes and combining forms. It will include common medical abbreviations, pronunciation, spelling and definitions of medical terminology related to the human body systems. People who are pursuing an allied health or nursing program, or who are reentering health care professions or persons working in health care related agencies will enhance their knowledge of medical terminology in this course. Required course for students entering Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program (not required for advanced placement students). (IN2)

    ALHN 113 , INTRODUCTION TO PATIENT CARE 1 (2)
  This course introduces the student to the health care delivery system, exploring methods of providing basic patient-care skills, infection control, patient safety, and an introduction to healthcare worker safety in a medical environment. A course intended for person considering a career in allied health or nursing, or those re-entering the health care profession. Labortory required. (A special fee will be assessed).     ALHN 114 , NURSE AIDE TRAINING 5 (7)
  This approved Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Training Competency Evaluation Program (TCEP) course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and technical skills to function as a nurse aide. At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to perform nursing related services to patients and residents in a long term care facility and be eleligble to take the state certification test. Laboratory Required. (A special fee will be asscessed.) A "C" or better must be achieved in this course in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. Prerequisite: communication skills, written and verbal communication skills. (IN2, IN5)

    ALHN 118 , PHARMACOLOGY FOR ALLIED HEALTH/NURS 3 (3)
  This course is designed to enable Allied Health students to acquire knowledge about pharmacology. General pharmacological concepts, such as drug medication preparation, drug calculations, drug classification and administration, drug interaction, will be presented. Drugs that are commonly given for diseases of the body systems will also be discussed. (IN1, IN4, IN5)

    ALHN 192 , CULTURAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH CARE 3 (3)
  This course is designed to increase awareness of the effects of cultural diversity on health status, health care, and the healthcare system in the United States. The role of the health care provider in caring for culturally diverse clients is addressed. Basic concepts, theories, and issues related to transcultural health care are addressed along with strategies for incorporating culturally appropriate care into the health care setting. Teaching strategies are varied to promote cognitive, behavioral and affective changes in the student related to cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill, and cultural sensitivity.

    ALHN 193 , MEDICATION AIDE TRAINING 5 (8.5)
  This approved Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN)course is designed to provide State TestedNurse Aides with the knowledge and technicalskills to function as a medication aide. Atthe conclusion of this course, theparticipant will be able to take the OhioBoard of Nursing state competency test forCertification Medication Aide in order topass medications, the participant must takean OBN approved course and pass the statecompetency test. Laboratory required. (Aspecial fee will be assessed.) A letter gradeof "C" or better in lecture, as well as aSatisfactory (S) grade in lab and clinicalmust be achieved in this course, in order toreceive a Certificate of Completion.Prerequisite: high school diploma or GED andacceptance into the Medication Aide program.(Must be 18 years of age or older, activestatus as a State Tested Nurse Aide perNurse Aide Registry or worked in a residential care facility, as defined by division (A)(7) of section 3721.09 of the Ohio Revised Code, as an aide who provided direct resident care for one full year or more, demonstrated math, written and verbal communication skills, and current standard First Aid and Basic Life Support CPR.)

    ALHN 221 , HEALTH CARE IN DEVELOPING NATIONS 4 (10)
  This elective allied health & nursing and surgical technology course is designed for any student interested in the culture and health care of citizens of rural developing nations. The course focuses on cultural aspects of surgical and medical care, comparing health care in the United States with care of the poor of developing countries who have little or no medical access. Students enrolled in any Division of Allied Health & Nursing program are invited to participate, and will engage in research in a topic of their choice. This class includes a college classroom portion and a two-week clinical experience in a developing country (i.e. Dominican Republic) with a Medical and Surgical Missionary Team. This course is co-listed with SRGT 221. (A special fee will be assessed.) (IN1, IN2, IN3, IN5)

Students willbe able to evaluate career selection,demonstrate employability skills, andsatisfactorily perform work-relatedcompetencies. Activities are coordinated andevaluated by college personnel. Course willbe graded on the S/U basis. Prerequisite: Astudent must be pursuing an approved programat LCCC; have completed 15 semester hourswith a minimum of six semester hours in thediscipline of the placement; have a minimumGPA of 2.5 in the discipline and a 2.0overall GPA; and have divisional approval.
