The Cab Jivers with Guest Alice Tan Ridley

When: 10/7/2012

Description:

The Cab Jivers of the Cab Calloway Orchestra are a smaller group drawn from the larger Cab Calloway Orchestra. They have delighted audiences across the country under the baton of Cab’s grandson, Calloway Brooks. His grandfather dazzled audiences dating back to the 1920's with his unique style, sound and visual performance, which set him and his Orchestra apart from other big bands. Mr. Brooks, who worked with Cab, has taken the baton to keep the family tradition, performing in the style of his Grandfather for new generations to enjoy. From many-million selling hits like Minnie the Moocher, the orchestra brings the audience into the show. The Cab Jivers deliver both the authentic sound of a hot Jazz Orchestra and a snazzy stage style-bringing out a jump, blues, and boogie experience of swing that is king and jive that’s alive and well today. Calloway Brooks and his awesome musicians deliver an authentic and unforgettable musical experience. Performing with Alice Tan Ridley will offer you a special and memorable event that will have you smiling long after the standing ovation that is certain to occur! Alice Tan Ridley, finalist on America's Got Talent in 2010 and winner of New York Music Award for Best New Performance in 2011, was born in Georgia into a musical family of 9 siblings, most of them artists. She has been captivating audiences since she was 3 years old. After moving to New York in 1971, raising her family (she is the mother of Oscar-nominated actress, Gabourey Sidibe, Precious) and teaching handicapped children, she resumed her singing career in 1992 beginning with a tour of Morocco, when she was invited by the Moroccan ambassador to the US to perform in his country. She has been dubbed "The Subway Idol" for her legendary performances that resulted in a flurry of YouTube videos, now reaching over 3 million hits. In 2002 Alice won the 30 Seconds to Fame FOX talent show and in 2007 she won an Emmy for the documentary Military Families. In 2010, at age 58, she auditioned for Americas Got Talent. Ridley's raw power and charm resonated with the judges and the audience and she was sent to Hollywood to compete in the finals. While she did not win, she won the hearts of millions of Americans, and has built an unbelievable fan base. She has also performed in Argentina, Germany, Uruguay, and The Netherlands as well as throughout the USA.
